Team Cherry has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding Hollow Knight: Silksong, though the studio remains careful about revealing what form that work will take or when players will see it. The game launched in September after a long and often unpredictable development cycle. Its release did not mark a pause for the Adelaide-based team, which says it is still building new material while maintaining its measured, iterative style.

Ari Gibson, the studio’s co-founder, said the project’s scope again reflects the team’s habit of allowing ideas to grow as they refine them.

“We didn’t plan seven years for Silksong,” he told Bloomberg.

Silksong started as downloadable content for the original Hollow Knight before expanding into a full sequel. Its evolution created expectations about what additional content might look like now that the main release is out. Gibson offered no firm outline, but he acknowledged that some elements cut during development may be returning. Bloomberg raised the possibility of a Steel Assassin Sharpe DLC, referencing a character teased years ago but absent from the final release. Gibson described Sharpe as a figure “waiting in the wings,” noting that a suite of enemies built around the character had been held back because the main game became too dense in its final stretch.

He said Team Cherry intends to honor its earlier plans while exploring new ideas that surfaced during production.

“We will make sure to deliver on all of our obligations. One, because they’re going to be very fun to do. But even alongside those tasks, we had our own ideas for extra things that could be added to the world.” — Ari Gibson

That balancing act mirrors the studio’s ongoing challenge: deciding how much room to give concepts that arise while the team is actively building a game. Co-founder William Pellen said their process on Silksong and the original Hollow Knight followed the same open-ended pattern.

“At the start of Silksong, and at the start of Hollow Knight, we had no conception it would take as long as it did for either game,” he said.

Pellen added that their next project may follow a similar trajectory. The team begins with a core idea, lets it grow, and defines limits only when necessary. Gibson said they are not worried if future work takes a long time, noting that their satisfaction with the current state of Silksong gives them room to move at a deliberate pace. The game has already received balance updates and technical fixes since launch, and Gibson said more refinements will continue as needed.

Both developers stressed that they are still experimenting within the Silksong world. They are considering updates of different scales, comparable to Hollow Knight’s smaller Lifeblood patch or the larger Godmaster and Grimm Troupe additions. Pellen said they have begun creating new material without locking down its final shape. The team expects to share more information when those ideas settle into clearer form.

For now, there is no timeline for what comes next. Gibson said the developers plan to communicate more regularly once they have concrete updates to discuss. Until then, they intend to keep exploring possibilities without committing to fixed boundaries.
