Paradox Interactive slipper Khans of the Steppe-DLC-en til Crusader Kings III

Paradox Interactive has officially announced the release of a new DLC for Crusader Kings III, titled Khans of the Steppe. This is the first major addition in Chapter IV, a content phase in which the developers shift their attention toward expanding the game's reach into Asia. As the name suggests, the Mongols take center stage in this latest update.

Nomadic government mechanics and resource-driven migration

The highlight of the expansion is the introduction of a brand-new nomadic government type. In this system, the core of the state's economy revolves around livestock herding, with animal herds considered a primary resource. These herds require fertile pastures to thrive, meaning the Great Khan must continuously manage the migration of the population to more abundant lands.

This dynamic creates a unique gameplay experience where survival and territorial movement play a crucial role, distinguishing nomadic rule from traditional kingdom management.

Unique Mongol features: tribute system and cultural events

In addition to new mechanics, the Mongol factions receive several culturally distinct features. These include a custom inheritance system and a more flexible alternative to vassalage known as tributaries. This structure allows players to manage subordinates with greater freedom and less rigidity than typical feudal relationships.

The DLC also introduces culturally immersive content, such as special events, including the celebration of Tsagaan Sar—the Mongolian Lunar New Year.

Patch 1.16.0 brings further improvements and new content

Alongside the DLC, Crusader Kings III has been updated to version 1.16.0, which includes a wide array of fixes, gameplay improvements, and new additions. Players can expect bug fixes, system enhancements, new illustrations, and in-game events that further enrich the experience.

Availability and future updates

Crusader Kings III is available on PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with full text localization in Russian. However, the Khans of the Steppe DLC is currently only released for PC.

Paradox has also confirmed that the next expansion is scheduled for release in Q3 2025 and will introduce a new royal coronation activity, adding another layer of ceremonial depth to the game.
