NVIDIA legger til den fan-laget Left 4 Dead RTX-nyinnspillingen i sin GeForce-oversikt

NVIDIA used its weekly GeForce roundup on 21 October to show Left 4 Dead RTX, a fan-made rebuild of Left 4 Dead 2 from NoMercyStudios with NightSightProductions publishing it and a Steam page planned. Valve’s co-op shooter launched in 2009 and has gone seventeen years without an official follow-up, which is most of the reason a mod like this gets a slot in a hardware company’s newsletter at all.

The project runs NVIDIA’s RTX Neural Radiance Cache for global illumination, with DLSS Ray Reconstruction, Multi Frame Generation and path tracing on top, and it uses DLSS 4.5 rather than the DLSS 5 model that drew complaints earlier this year. The trailer was captured on a GeForce RTX 5090 at 4K with maximum settings, and its own description says the footage does not represent the final product. There is no release date; the team describes the work as actively in development, and it has told people not to expect it soon. Fans have tried to remake Left 4 Dead 2 before, and none of those attempts got this far, which is partly a question of tooling and partly a question of who is willing to publish one.

NoMercyStudios draws a line between switching on an upscaler and remaking the assets underneath.

“rebuild the game with new hand-crafted, physically based textures, enhanced high-poly models, and updated lighting, all in stunning 4K.”

The card in that capture is the one nobody can currently buy. Rumors about RTX 5090 supply say production has stopped outright, with Micro Center moving nearly every ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and ZOTAC model to Not Carried rather than out of stock, and leakers claiming the remaining GB202 chips are going to professional RTX PRO cards instead. B&H has reportedly started marking the card as discontinued as well, and the rumour mill expects a 24 GB RTX 5080 to take over as the GeForce flagship. A card that launched in January 2025 at $1,999 now sells between $5,000 and over $9,000 depending on region, with German retailers starting near €5,999. NVIDIA has neither confirmed nor denied any of it.

My own machine is a laptop with a GTX 1650 in it, so a path-traced Left 4 Dead is something I will watch on YouTube rather than run. That gap is the awkward part of a demo like this, because the work is real and the hardware running it is a rumour away from being out of production. And yes, now I have a solid motive to upgrade my device...

The software side has been moving faster than the silicon. NVIDIA doubled DLSS 5 speed in its October update, shrinking the model to roughly 118 million parameters and 20 percent less VRAM at 4K, and RTX Remix, the modding tool projects like this one lean on, gets that model today. Hogwarts Legacy picks up DLSS 5 on 5 November with Avalanche Software tuning it to protect the art style, which is the direct answer to the complaint that the model was altering faces and materials. A separate new frame generation mode called Preset C swaps one AI model for a lighter algorithm and adds up to 35 percent on an RTX 5060, at a small cost to image quality, and it currently only exists inside the NVIDIA App beta.

The roundup slot sits oddly next to the company’s own accounting. NVIDIA recorded $81.6 billion in revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and stopped breaking gaming out as its own line in the report, after years of treating GeForce as a core pillar of the business, while still pushing gaming technology like its neural compression work. The weekly roundup that just put a Left 4 Dead mod in front of a few million people is marketing for a company that no longer counts gaming separately.

I do not read that as cynicism, and the project gets reach it could never buy on its own. It does mean the people most likely to finish Left 4 Dead RTX and the people NVIDIA builds its quarters around stopped being the same group some time ago.

The co-op zombie shooter kept moving while Valve stood still. Dying Light: The Beast shipped with more than 170 zombie variants, over 110 of them Biters rebuilt away from the mummified look of the older games, close to 60 Virals produced by the antagonist’s experiments, and a smaller set of Chimeras modelled from research into human musculature. Concept artist Charidimos Bitsakakis built that around keeping something human in the infected rather than piling on gore, and Techland said it was “going big” on a project it had first sketched out as downloadable content. Some of those Virals spit acid or hit with unnatural strength, and the Chimeras are skinless and split-jawed, built to be unpleasant to look at before they are difficult to fight. A fan remake re-texturing four survivors and a handful of special infected from 2009 is working at a very different scale.

What keeps Left 4 Dead 2 installed is that four people can be in a round in under a minute, and no amount of lighting touches that. I would rather see the AI Director reworked than see the walls path traced, and that is the one job nobody outside Valve can take on.

Read also, Valve composer Mike Morasky said the HLX codename out loud at GameSoundCon, on a panel about the Source 2 audio engine, and a fellow panelist whispered “Nice work” the moment it landed. The clip restarted the Half-Life 3 rumour cycle within a day.
