Although the main event of the week related to pre-orders and price announcements is expected to be GTA 6, set to be revealed on June 25th, Valve decided to open pre-orders for their own hybrid PC-console device called the Steam Machine and announced official prices for its various models. This caused quite a stir online, as most fans believe the price of the device, given its hardware, is overpriced.

It has been revealed that the standard version of the Steam Machine, equipped with a 512 GB SSD, will be priced at $1049 (€1039/ £879). The same model bundled with a Steam Controller will cost $1128 (€1108/ £938), while the version featuring a 2 TB storage drive is set at $1349 (€1359/ £1149). The top-tier configuration, which includes a 2 TB SSD and a Steam Controller, will be available for $1428 (€1428/ £1208).

At the same time, IGN published a new report citing Valve's engineers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat, which states that the original price of the Steam Machine was intended to be about 30-35% lower than the final cost. Consequently, the base model would have been priced around $750, but due to rising component costs and other supply chain issues, the price ended up being what it is.

It's also worth noting that with the base edition of the Steam Machine, you get a gaming device equipped with the following components:

  • CPU: Semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6-core/ 12-thread, up to 4.8 GHz, 30W TDP
  • GPU: Semi-custom AMD RDNA3 with 28 Compute Units, maximum sustained clock at 2.45 GHz, 110W TDP
  • RAM: 16GB DDR5 + 8GB GDDR6 VRAM
  • Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD DisplayPort 1.4: Supports up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz, with HDR,
  • FreeSync, and daisy-chaining capabilities.
  • HDMI 2.0: Supports up to 4K at 120Hz, with HDR, FreeSync, and CEC support. Operating System: SteamOS 3 (based on Arch Linux)

As mentioned earlier, opinions among fans about the Steam Machine are divided. Some still believe that the Steam Machine has a place in the market and could potentially become a long-term competitor to PCs and consoles. However, the other half feels that the device is overpriced, and for the same amount of money, purchasing a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or a gaming PC is a more sensible choice. However, there had already been speculation that the price of the Steam Machine would be higher than expected due to the ongoing crisis affecting RAM availability.
