Star Wars Outlaws kommer til Switch 2 i september, men det er ikke jedien du leter etter

Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws is launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 on 4th September 2025, adding another major third-party title to the platform’s upcoming slate. The game was previously confirmed for Switch 2 but didn’t have a release date—until now. This puts it right in the mix of a packed autumn for Nintendo’s new hardware. However, the critical reception from its original launch raises questions about how much of an impact it’ll make on a system stacked with top-tier franchises and remastered hits.

While this new version gives Nintendo Switch 2 users another open-world blockbuster to explore, Star Wars Outlaws arrives carrying the weight of a rough debut. Its original release scored poorly across the board, with reviewers pointing out that it falls short in nearly every category where other genre leaders shine. That’s a tough look next to games like Zelda, Mario Kart World, and Donkey Kong Bananza —titles that are either platform juggernauts or fresh takes from studios with strong Nintendo DNA.

Eurogamer didn’t mince words in their original review.

“It lacks the branching, open stealth of an Arkham game, the systemic options of a Dishonored or the incisive, relentlessly satisfying speed of picking enemies off in Assassin’s Creed,” it reads. “It lacks the linear polish and charisma of Uncharted. Lacks the animation flow to its yellow-ledge platforming next to a Horizon, or the sheer joy of taking platforming and making it into an actual game in itself, as in Star Wars Jedi.”

That’s a long way of saying: this one’s got the branding, but not the gameplay bite.

The Switch 2 lineup is already huge, with heavy hitters both new and upgraded. Just weeks before Outlaws lands, fans will be busy with Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar and Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star Crossed World. Days after its arrival, Daemon x Machina Titanic Scion drops—another fast-paced, combat-heavy title likely to draw the attention of action fans. By winter, the system will have added Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Witchbrook, and Marvel Cosmic Invasion, crowding the market even more.

Ubisoft’s approach to Switch 2 seems to be widening, too. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows may be next in line for the platform. The studio’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, confirmed that "some new versions" of the game are being made for “other machines”—a phrase that basically only points to Nintendo hardware at this stage. It wouldn’t be surprising to see more of Ubisoft’s catalogue slide onto the Switch 2 as the console grows its install base and proves its technical ceiling.

Still, Star Wars Outlaws faces an uphill battle. It’s not just competing with fan-favorite Nintendo games and fresh third-party exclusives—it’s also trying to win back players who’ve already heard the bad buzz. And unless the Switch 2 port comes with major improvements, it could end up lost in a crowd that includes Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition, Hitman World of Assassination Signature Edition, and even Civilization VII. Games that not only carry strong brand recognition but also a proven gameplay loop.

So far, no details have been shared about whether Outlaws on Switch 2 will come with any upgrades or changes. It’s being presented as a straight release, with no hints at improved combat mechanics, graphical fidelity, or new mission content. If that’s the case, it risks being seen as a late-to-the-party port, arriving months after its initial release with no buzz to push it forward.

Meanwhile, Switch 2 users aren’t starved for options. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are both getting upgraded Switch 2 editions. Super Mario Party Jamboree, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, and Pokémon Legends Z-A are all on the way. Even Elden Ring Tarnished Edition is expected to hit sometime in 2025, potentially crowding the already packed lineup of open-world epics.

With Star Wars Outlaws dropping on 4th September, it’ll be interesting to see how—or if—it holds attention in the middle of a wild release calendar. It’s another brick in the growing Switch 2 wall of third-party support, but one that may not stand out unless Ubisoft has a few surprises still hidden in the holster. For now, it’s one more galaxy in a universe that’s already overflowing.
