One of the biggest announcements of this summer was God of War: Laufey—a new game in the franchise featuring Faye as the main character, a rumor that had been circulating for some time. The game was officially revealed during the State of Play presentation and became the most viewed and talked-about event among all gaming shows earlier this month, surpassing major reveals like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Resident Evil Veronica.

It has been confirmed that the events of God of War: Laufey occur simultaneously with God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök. Playing as Freya, we find ourselves in a mysterious place called Everywhen, where, besides the titular heroine, many other divine beings are present—including the Ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and the Mongol/Tibetan deity Begtse, as revealed in the debut trailer. It turns out that Santa Monica Studio had been planning to release the game nearly 10 years ago, around the time the original God of War (2018) came out.

In a new interview with Comic Games Magazine, actress Deborah Ann Woll, who lent her appearance and voice to Faye/Laufey, shared some insights. She recalled how in 2018, Cory Barlog, the head of Santa Monica Studio, invited her to the office to discuss God of War: Ragnarok. Even back then, the studio already had a clear vision and a poster of God of War Laufey featuring Faye's magical companion cube for the new game. You can check out an excerpt from Woll's interview below:

“You know, again, I’ve known about this for nearly ten years, and I haven’t been able to talk about it. He pitched it to me in 2018, and they had known about it before then. It’s wild. Like when Corey brought me in to talk about doing Ragnarök and show me the 2018 game, he already had a poster for the Laufey game with me and a cube. A cube that’s been there since the beginning. It’s deeply a part of the lore.”

In the same interview, Deborah Ann Woll confirmed that God of War Laufey is set to significantly expand the universe's lore and expressed hope that "this is just the beginning." Earlier, the game director, Ariel Lawrence, teased that she would like to see more games focused on Faye in the future. Additionally, she recently made a promising statement suggesting that God of War Laufey might feature gods who were previously killed by Kratos —including Ares from the original 2005 game. Furthermore, fans believe that Baldur, the main antagonist of God of War (2018), could also make an appearance in the game.

The release date for God of War: Laufey remains unknown, but many insiders speculate it will launch in the first half of 2027. The game is being developed exclusively for PlayStation 5.
