Saints Row-skaperen snakker om likheter i GTA

Saints Row franchise is likely to be the closest to GTA game series. Not only because of longevity but the main idea; huge open world, gang showdowns full of action, specifically, in the first two games of the series. Since Saints Row 4 series went to something different; we saw heroes travelling to space and hell until Saints Row released in 2022 reset the series. Speaking of which, it wasn't a great move for the franchise and the fate of Saints Row for now remains unconfirmed.

Back in 2006, Volition released the very first game of the series and according to Saints Row creator Chris Stockman it was a great time for releasing first game of the franchise. In the interview with FRVR, he revealed that releasing Saints Row on Xbox 360 in 2006 was a perfect moment; there was no GTA-like game at that time at the console. He also admitted if GTA 4 would have been available at that moment, Saints Row would never get a chance they get. At the same time he confirmed studio have taken some features from Grand Theft Auto franchise but noted Saints Row series have something GTA games don't like customization on main character, dynamic system of weather, bunch of addictional stuff, buying and customize apartments etc.

"One of the key success, and the reason why that game was successful, was because the fortunate timing of when it launched. There was that air of familiarity there like 'am I playing a GTA game? No! But I kinda feel like I am'. That was intentional, entirely intentional"
