CraftGPT bringer ChatGPT til Minecraft, drevet av Redstone

YouTuber sammyuri has built a functional version of ChatGPT entirely inside Minecraft. Dubbed CraftGPT, this ambitious project compresses a large language model into 439 million blocks using only vanilla Minecraft redstone mechanics. Despite its scale, CraftGPT runs on a relatively small model with just 5 million parameters, trained in Python using the TinyChat dataset from HuggingFace.

The project's GitHub page notes the limitations clearly: "you shouldn't have high expectations. The model is very prone to going off topic, producing responses that are not grammatically correct, or simply outputting garbage. The model also has a very small context window of only 64 tokens. The conversations in the showcase video show the model at its best, not necessarily at its average performance."

To handle the sheer size of the build, sammyuri used the Distant Horizons mod, which ensures that all blocks remain loaded and operational. Even with a High Performance Redstone setup to accelerate tick rates, generating a response can take hours. The creator warns that without a multithreaded Minecraft server, users might be waiting far longer for outputs.

CraftGPT’s vocabulary is limited to 1,920 tokens, making its conversational ability fairly basic. It can manage short exchanges in English but struggles with coherence over extended interactions. Despite these technical restrictions, the project demonstrates how far Minecraft enthusiasts are willing to push the game's mechanics and the creativity that redstone enables.

Sammyuri’s build has drawn attention for its sheer scale and ambition, towering over standard Minecraft structures and even blocking sunlight in the in-game environment.
