Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games and one of the most influential figures in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, has addressed a major question that fans have been asking for years: did he contribute to GTA 6 before leaving Rockstar? The answer is no.

Houser confirmed in a recent interview with IGN that he had no involvement in the story or character development for the upcoming game. He left Rockstar in February 2020, more than half a decade ago, after shaping the studio’s voice across 12 Grand Theft Auto titles as well as both Red Dead Redemption games. His departure left fans uncertain about whether Rockstar’s most important series could maintain its sharp writing and detailed world-building without him. Pre-production on GTA 6 reportedly began before his exit, so speculation lingered that he may have at least sketched out early ideas. Houser has now put that theory to rest.

“I wrote the last 10 or 11. I think the world’s probably had enough GTA from me. They’re always a new story. not going to be a story I wrote or a character set that I developed, but I think it’s going to be exciting. The game will be great, I’m sure.” — Dan Houser

While Houser admitted it feels unusual to play a Grand Theft Auto game without knowing its full story in advance, he expressed confidence in Rockstar’s current creative team. He believes the studio has the talent to carry the series forward and that GTA 6 will deliver a strong narrative regardless of his absence.

His comments line up with the two official GTA 6 trailers released so far, which have shown a game that retains Rockstar’s trademark mix of satire, open-world immersion, and cinematic storytelling. Fans are closely watching how the writing holds up under new leadership, as this is the first mainline GTA developed without Houser’s direct influence.

Houser’s appearance also revisited another long-standing topic of interest among Rockstar fans. In the same interview, he explained why Bully 2 never happened, attributing it to Rockstar being spread thin with multiple projects such as GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, and Max Payne 3. This backed up years of rumors and leaks suggesting the sequel was once in development but sidelined for bigger priorities.

For GTA 6, the focus remains squarely on its 2026 launch. Rockstar has set a release date of May 26, 2026, giving the studio ample time to refine what is already shaping up to be its most ambitious title yet. Without Houser’s fingerprints on the script, GTA 6 represents a new creative era for the company, one where the writing team must prove it can deliver the same sharpness and cultural relevance that defined past entries.

Houser, meanwhile, has moved on to new ventures. In 2021, he founded Absurd Ventures, a multimedia company already juggling several projects. The studio is working on a AAA sci-fi open-world action-adventure game in partnership with Smilegate, still in early development, while also preparing to launch a graphic novel titled American Caper this November. These projects mark Houser’s first major public-facing work since leaving Rockstar, showing he is far from done with storytelling, even if his GTA chapter is closed.

His confirmation brings clarity to a lingering question but also sets expectations. GTA 6 will be the first test of Rockstar’s ability to move forward without one of its key architects, and while Houser himself is optimistic, fans will have to wait until release day to see if the series still has the same narrative impact. For now, his words leave little doubt: the future of Grand Theft Auto is entirely in Rockstar’s current hands.
