PlayStation has registered a patent for a controller with heating and cooling technology

Sony has registered a patent for a controller that can change its temperature based on the player's actions and gameplay. The patent, published by Exputer, describes a range of controller features that could enhance tactile sensations using a soft, "elastically deformable" touch component.

For example, when the sensor is placed on the front of the controller, it detects when the player deforms the controller by pressing, twisting, rubbing, or squeezing it. The patent also describes the inclusion of a "temperature control apparatus" that allows the accessory's temperature to be increased or decreased based on the player's actions and, most likely, the situation in the game.

"For example, the temperature control apparatus can be controlled such that the greater the deformation, the higher the temperature," the patent states. "This allows the user to feel a temperature change corresponding to the deformation."

The document also describes the potential use of a combination of "magnetic fluids" and electric or magnetic fields to change the shape and hardness of the soft parts of the theoretical controller.

Undoubtedly, the controller's capabilities mentioned in the patent are far from becoming part of a consumer product. However, if any of these ambitious features become part of a future Playstation controller, players will be able to experience a wide range of exciting control options.
