Destiny 2's Crossover Success Story: A Blueprint Halo Infinite Could Follow
The past decade has been a transformative period for Bungie. Departing from the Halo series in 2010 with the memorable Halo Reach, Bungie embarked on a new journey, creating Destiny, their first new intellectual property in nearly ten years. Despite some initial shortcomings, Destiny showcased immense potential in its expansive universe, character, and enemy designs, as well as its gameplay—a potential that Destiny 2 would go on to fully harness upon its release in 2017.
Over the years, Destiny 2 has navigated through various highs and lows but has maintained a strong popularity, thanks largely to continuous content updates. While its major DLC expansions have garnered significant attention, the smaller, regular content updates—particularly those introducing new, often crossover, cosmetics—have played a crucial role in keeping the community engaged.
Destiny 2 has not only welcomed characters from other games like Fortnite and Fall Guys into its universe but also hosted its own crossover events, starting with a notable Assassin's Creed-themed cosmetic collaboration in December 2022. This successful endeavor led to further collaborations, including a significant crossover in May 2023 featuring cosmetics from PlayStation's premier titles such as Horizon, God of War, and Ghost of Tsushima.
An interesting, albeit unofficial, crossover took place during Bungie's 30th anniversary celebration, where Destiny 2 integrated weapons reminiscent of the Halo series, blurring the lines between Bungie's past and present creations.
In contrast, Halo Infinite, despite its own indirect crossovers with franchises like Fortnite and Microsoft Flight Simulator, has largely confined its crossover content to the Halo universe itself. This presents an opportunity for Halo Infinite to experiment with external video game franchise crossovers, potentially starting with Destiny-themed cosmetics in a nod to Bungie's legacy. Such a move could enrich Halo Infinite's universe and offer players new ways to customize their experience, following in the footsteps of Destiny 2's successful foray into video game crossovers.
