Giving me the exact same feeling I had with Elden Ring and Street Fighter 6, I ultimately think Phantom Blade Zero deserves the same perfect score. While Nioh 3 and Onimusha: Way of the Sword are both excellent action games that deserved their high scores this year, I believe Phantom Blade Zero stands slightly above them.

Phantom Blade Zero is one of the best action games I’ve played in a long time, with standout combat that never came even close to feeling old across 50 hours of playing. Its tale of betrayal and revenge mostly plays it extremely safe, and some unfortunate invisible barriers and technical hiccups can cause minor frustrations – but the overwhelming majority of my time with this stunning, incredibly well tuned adventure was downright awesome.

An intense and fast-paced combat system is the star, with so much variety backing it and incredible enemies to test it. Fun exploration, beautiful visuals, and a unique style then help it reach the heights of the genre’s elite.

Phantom Blade Zero is an action RPG from Chinese studio S-Game, inspired by the wuxia genre, meaning Chinese stories about martial arts masters. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game combines fast-paced combat with Metroidvania elements. In the story, you play as Soul, a warrior with only 66 days left to live. He’ll have to fend off assassins, uncover a conspiracy that threatens the entire world, and defend his values with his life. The game launches on October 29 on PC and PlayStation 5, and among consoles, it will remain a PS5 exclusive for a year.
