Crimson Desert has a long-suffering history with its release date. Initially, Pearl Abyss wanted to launch the title back in 2021 after the game’s announcement at The Game Awards 2020. However, due to difficulties during the development, specifically console certification and also polishing, Crimson Desert has been postponed multiple times during 2023-2025, before March 19, 2026, was eyed to be the final destination, when the game went gold this January. Hopefully, all these delays had no impact on the game’s quality. Otherwise, this is going to be a massive disappointment.

Despite multiple delays that sometimes took years, over the last year the developers have revealed much information about Crimson Desert, including some exciting gameplay trailers. Back in January, a few weeks before the game had gone gold, new gameplay was revealed during the New Game Plus Showcase, and it was revealed the game’s map is twice as big as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Earlier, IGN also shared an exclusive look at Crimson Desert gameplay, where you can see the stunning combat system in action, the main character’s movement across the map using a device similar to a grapple, and epic boss fights that end with a fortress capturing.

The latest video about Crimson Desert was recently uploaded to the game’s official YouTube channel. It’s dedicated to its cast, and you can watch it below. It also includes a couple of new shots from its actual gameplay.

Crimson Desert Lore: Setting, Characters, and Plot

Before Crimson Desert became what it is right now, it’s important to say that initially the game was developed as a prequel to multiplayer RPG Black Desert Online, before it turned out to be a standalone adventure.

Crimson Desert is set in the fictional fantasy open-world region Pywel, a continent that features different mysterious creations, dragons, flying robots, and even sky islands called Aerial Abyss. There is no official information on the game’s map, but it’s reportedly huge and around 80 square kilometers - as mentioned above, it’s bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2 and twice as big as in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The story of Crimson Desert is followed by someone named Kliff, the leader of the mercenary unit Greymanes. With his partners, Oongka, Yanna, and Naira, together they’re fighting against Greymane's biggest enemies - The Black Bears, another faction to exist in the Pywel. After the fierce battles, Kliss and his friends are getting separated, and he’s looking to reunite with them, rebuild the Greymanes, and find the leader of the Black Bears, Myurdin.

Crimson Desert Gameplay

Although Crimson Desert was initially a multiplayer spin-off to Black Desert Online, the game will not feature any multiplayer mode and will be a completely standalone single-player title. Built by the BlackSpace engine, the game offers a dynamic combat system that allows players to use multiple combo attacks, as well as melee weapons. There are a lot of activities where you can spend your time in a huge open world, such as fishing, crafting systems, hunting, building houses, etc. Speaking of other features, Crimson Desert will also have a dynamic weather system, no leveling mode, and no romances as well, though the last may disappoint some players. Pearl Abyss promises there will be a lot of things to do in Crimson Desert, except for the story, so the players should not be bored.

Crimson Desert might be an ambitious and massive RPG, with a huge open world and a bunch of different activities, with a dynamic combat system and potentially a solid story. It’s definitely a must-have for all RPG fans, but the question is, will the ordinary players who are not familiar with the RPG genre like the game? Plus, let’s not forget Crimson Desert has been in development for a while and has been delayed multiple times, and that could have an impact on the game’s quality. Last year’s MindsEye was another ambitious project, but we remember how it flopped at the launch. Hopefully, it won’t happen with Crimson Desert, and even Mike York, former Red Dead Redemption 2 senior animator, thinks the game could beat Grand Theft Auto as the Game of the Year. Will it happen?
