Pavel Durov has announced a major upcoming change for the Toncoin network that could significantly reshape how users interact with blockchain-based payments inside Telegram.

According to the announcement, TON is preparing to reduce transaction fees by approximately 6 times within the next week. After this update, the cost of sending a transaction on the network is expected to fall to around 0.00039 TON, which is roughly $0.0005 per transfer at current market values.

One of the most important aspects of this change is that the fee structure will become fixed. This means that transaction costs will no longer depend on network congestion or demand. Whether the network is heavily used or relatively quiet, users will pay the same minimal fee. This removes one of the biggest uncertainties in many blockchain systems, where fees can spike during peak activity.

Even more notably, Durov suggested that shortly after this update, most transactions could become effectively free. While technically a small fee may still exist in the background to maintain network security and validator incentives, the practical cost for everyday users may drop to near zero.

This development is especially significant due to the massive scale of Telegram’s ecosystem. With hundreds of millions of active users, TON is uniquely positioned compared to other blockchains. Instead of relying purely on external crypto adoption, it is directly integrated into a mainstream communication platform used globally for messaging, communities, and digital services.

By lowering transaction costs to near-zero levels, TON opens the door to a wide range of real-world use cases. Microtransactions, tipping systems, in-app payments, digital goods trading, and automated services inside Telegram could become much more practical. Users would no longer need to consider network fees when making small or frequent transfers, which has been a major barrier in other blockchain ecosystems.
