Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a new IP from Naughty Dog, the developers behind The Last of Us, is one of the most anticipated upcoming games. For a long time after its announcement in 2024, there had been no official word on the project—but now the developers have broken their silence, revealing when we can expect to see the game showcased again.

In a new blog post on the Naughty Dog website, studio head Neil Druckmann announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will not be showcased this year —a full presentation of the game will not take place until 2027, as the developers need more time to polish the game to the desired standard. Additionally, Druckmann noted that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is the studio’s most ambitious project to date. His more detailed comments, along with new artwork from the game, are available below:

“The team is heads down on what is shaping up to be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious game yet. There’s an electricity around the studio right now as all the pieces come together, and we’re stoked to finally unveil Intergalactic in all its glory. But…we need to cook for just a little bit longer.

So, we want to set expectations: we’re going to be quiet for the rest of this year. In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure. We know it’s been a long time since we’ve had much to share with you. We don’t take your continued support for granted. We’re working incredibly hard to make something worthy of your patience.”

Druckmann's comments seem to cast doubt on the possibility that the studio's new IP will be released in 2027, as previously reported. It is believed the game is already in an advanced stage of development, and a delay to 2028 would reportedly cost the studio additional and quite substantial expenses. However, we will likely only learn the official details when Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is fully unveiled next year.

Naughty Dog also made an important announcement regarding The Last of Us. Two new games in the franchise are in development, though they are still in the very early stages. Given the uncertain release timeline for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, these games will likely not be released until at least 2029–2030 and may be planned for the PlayStation 6.
