FromSoftware has published no official resolution or frame rate specification for this build, so anything you read about handheld performance comes from previews rather than a spec sheet. What Elden Ring Is, and Why It Works on Switch 2

Elden Ring took Game of the Year at The Game Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2022, and has sold more than 28 million copies. Hidetaka Miyazaki built the world with George R. R. Martin, and it plays like Dark Souls stretched across an open map: no difficulty slider, no waypoint hand-holding, and a Tarnished who dies to a mounted knight in the opening ten minutes.

The port is not the best-looking version. Character models carry less detail than on PS5, some textures read as washed out, and there is no 60fps toggle. Andrew Webster at The Verge, who put roughly ten hours into the port before release, reported none of that registering once he was deep enough into the world, and no stuttering in either docked or portable play.

What the hardware adds is worth more than what it takes. Docked with a Pro Controller, the input feel matches any other console, and the deadzone and stick response on the Pro are close enough to a DualSense that muscle memory carries over. Undocked, the game becomes something you can pick up for twenty minutes: clear a camp, find one more Site of Grace, put it down. An eighty-hour game that only exists in front of a television asks for eighty hours you might not have. The same game on a tablet asks for whatever you can spare.

I am playing Dark Souls Remastered on PS5 right now and still plan to run Elden Ring on Switch 2 rather than restarting it on PlayStation. The handheld version is the one I will actually finish.

Should You Buy Elden Ring on Switch 2?

If you have never played it, this is a clean entry point. One purchase, everything included, no separate expansion to hunt down, and a console you can carry.

If you already own Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree on PS5, Xbox or PC, the calculation changes. The new Tarnished Pack content sells separately on those platforms for €4.99, and no save transfers to Switch 2 in any direction. There is no cross-save, no PC-to-console route, and cross-generation transfers only ever worked inside a console family. A 200-hour character on Steam stays on Steam.

Matchmaking follows the same rule. FromSoftware never shipped crossplay for this game, so co-op summons and invasions on Switch 2 pair you with other Switch 2 players only.

What's Actually New in the Tarnished Pack?

The Tarnished Pack released across every platform on the same day as the Switch 2 version, and it is the only genuinely new content in this bundle. It contains two starting classes, the Heavy Knight and the Idus Knight, four armour sets, and three customisation skins for Torrent. Pre-orders came with two gestures, The Ring and Ring of Miquella, which Bandai Namco has not described as permanently exclusive.

That is the full list. Shadow of the Erdtree, which shipped in June 2024, remains the only full expansion Elden Ring has received: a separate map called the Realm of Shadow, ninety bosses, and the Scadutree Fragment system that replaces normal leveling as your main source of survivability inside it. FromSoftware has announced nothing further for Elden Ring, and nothing for Nightreign, the standalone co-op game set in the same world.

For a Switch 2 owner starting today, that means one game, one expansion, one add-on pack, and somewhere north of a hundred hours if you intend to see most of it.
