Sony bekreftet beslutningen om å slutte å gi ut diskbaserte spill i den siste økonomiske rapporten.
One of the biggest and most discussed topics this year was Sony's decision to stop releasing games on discs starting in 2028. That caused quite a storm among users, and plenty of fans are still trying various ways to get the company to reconsider.
But it looks like Sony has already made its final call, as the company released its Q1 FY2026 results. Additionally, Sony CFO Lin Tao commented for the first time on the decision to phase out discs. According to her, management has made a decision to stop producing games on discs about a year and a half before it actually took effect, and she understands why many gamers were disappointed. Still, the main driver behind it is Sony's push to digitize not just games but its entire ecosystem. Lin Tao also confirmed games will still be sold in physical boxes, just with a digital key inside instead of a disc, as previously reported.
The financial report also showed digital game sales now exceed 80%, which is probably the clearest indicator of why Sony's making this shift. Among other numbers, total PlayStation 5 shipments have now reached 95.3 million units worldwide, though Sony only shipped 1.6 million consoles this quarter, down 900,000 from the same period last fiscal year. The PlayStation Network now has 125 million active users, and total PS4/PS5 games hit 66.1 million copies.
As for ways fans are pushing back, a petition asking Sony to keep releasing games on discs has gathered more than 350,000 signatures so far. However, by the latest statement, Sony's made it clear that the company has no intention of reversing course, and it claims they will do what they can to keep players satisfied.
Meanwhile, Sony still has not shared first details and the release date for the PlayStation 6, its next-gen console. According to insider Millie A, the launch is still targeted for 2027, with full-scale production reportedly kicking off next May. This month also brought reports that the PS6 may include magnetic sensors in its controllers and a significantly upgraded cooling system compared to the PS5—using "standard sealed fluid, such as water" instead of liquid metal.
