Sony øker PlayStation 5-prisene globalt med henvisning til økonomisk press
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced an immediate increase in the recommended retail price for the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal remote player. The company shared the details via a blog post on March 27, 2026, confirming that the new pricing structures will take effect on April 2. This decision follows what the manufacturer describes as a careful evaluation of the global economic landscape. Sony leadership specifically identified continued pressures in international markets as the primary reason for the adjustment. In the United Kingdom, the cost of the standard console will rise by approximately £90. The move comes as electronics manufacturers navigate a period of significant price volatility for essential internal hardware components.
Industry analyst and research director at Ampere Analysis, Piers Harding-Rolls, said to Eurogamer that the move appears to be a response to an elongated increase in the cost of memory and storage. These components remain essential for high-performance console hardware. Harding-Rolls suggested that Sony likely reached the end of its previous price protection agreements for these parts. I see this as a logical step for a company attempting to protect its hardware margins during a period of intense supply chain instability. With the demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure driving up the global price of RAM, manufacturers face a direct impact on their production budgets.
- United Kingdom: PS5 – £569.99, PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99, PS5 Pro – £789.99, PlayStation Portal – £219.99
- Europe: PS5 – €649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – €599.99, PS5 Pro – €899.99, PlayStation Portal – €249.99
- US: PS5 – $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99, PS5 Pro – $899.99, PlayStation Portal – $249.99
- Japan: PS5 – ¥97,980, PS5 Digital Edition – ¥89,980, PS5 Pro – ¥137,980, PlayStation Portal – ¥39,980
"With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we've decided to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide."

The timing of the price hike presents a specific challenge for the gaming industry as it prepares for major software releases. Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled for a November launch, and analysts suggest that the increased cost of entry for new hardware may soften the demand for the title. While Sony has a substantial established user base five years into the current generation, the price hike may deter late adopters or those needing to replace aging units. I think the market will react with caution as competitors like Microsoft and Nintendo consider their own responses to these same manufacturing pressures. Microsoft is reportedly evaluating a potential price increase for the Xbox Series X and Series S models, while Nintendo faces similar decisions regarding its upcoming successor to the Switch.
"The supply chain shock of the elongated increase in memory and storage prices – both essential for console hardware – means that there is some inevitability to the PlayStation hardware price increases announced by Sony today. It is likely that Sony had price protections for its components for a set period and this may well have come to an end. With no sign of prices easing largely due to demand for AI infrastructure, Sony will have made the move to protect its slim hardware margins. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Microsoft and Nintendo followed suit in the not-too-distant future."

Bloomberg reports that the rising cost of components has already influenced long-term planning within the industry. Sony is reportedly considering a delay for the eventual release of the PlayStation 6, potentially pushing it into 2028 or 2029. Other hardware manufacturers are experiencing similar setbacks. Valve recently announced a delay for its Steam Machines, moving the expected release from the first quarter of the year to an unspecified date in the first half of 2026. This delay is attributed directly to the surges in RAM and storage pricing that have affected the entire consumer electronics sector.
"You've got rapidly rising cost-of-living challenges driven further by the war in Iran, mixed with costly component prices impacting the pricing of these machines. One small positive is that we are most of the way through this console generation, so PlayStation has a strong install base to sell games to already. Everyone had hoped to see GTA 6 deliver a large spike in new console players, and this will certainly cause people to think twice."

Macroeconomic factors contribute to the volatility. Analysts point to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a source of a new wave of inflation that compounds the rising cost of materials. In the United States, the standard PlayStation 5 will increase by $100, representing an 18 percent rise in cost. This shift marks a rare instance of a console becoming more expensive several years after its initial launch. Historically, manufacturing efficiencies usually lead to price reductions over time, but the current scarcity of high-speed memory modules has reversed this trend.
The broader gaming market now faces a period of uncertainty regarding hardware accessibility. If hardware investment weakens, the momentum for the AAA PC and console gaming sectors could slow. Some industry observers suggest that consumers may turn to streaming services if the initial cost of hardware becomes prohibitive. For Nintendo, the situation is particularly delicate as the company prepares to establish a new platform with the Switch 2 without alienating its customer base through high entry prices. The industry remains in a hyper-competitive state where the cost of hardware is a critical factor in maintaining growth.
