Roblox-spillere i opprør over tvungen bytte til animerte hoder
Currently, Roblox avatars feature two types of heads: Classic Heads, which are static and display a single facial expression, and Dynamic Heads, which are animated and can convey a range of emotions. Many long-time players prefer the simpler, static Classic Heads. However, Roblox is moving to convert all heads to the dynamic format, a decision that has been met with intense backlash.
In a post about the update, a Roblox spokesperson stated:
"We are building a platform where every user can express themselves authentically...Classic Heads and Faces are static and do not support the defined cage regions or animation requirements of this policy, nor do they allow for users to express themselves."
The company explained that animation is vital for user self-expression and that the conversion of all Classic Heads and Faces to Dynamic Heads is expected to be completed in February 2026.
The updated Heads policy, which took effect immediately, mandates that all new head submissions must include a caged model to support accessory layering, defined eye and mouth regions that respond to animations, and the ability to produce a minimum of 17 expressions.
A timeline laid out in the policy has further alarmed players. In addition to the new submission requirements, a March 3 deadline has been set for the transition. Any Heads not in compliance by this date will be removed from the marketplace. On June 15, non-compliant heads will be permanently removed from user inventories.
"After this point, Roblox will attempt a best effort to update all remaining Heads to be compliant while respecting artistic intent."
— Roblox stated regarding the June deadline.
"Creators will have the opportunity to reject these changes if they do not approve. If heads are not updated by creators or by Roblox, we will remove the Head from user inventories."
This new policy has significant implications for creators on the largely player-content-driven platform. Those who do not update their Classic Head models to meet the new Dynamic Head standards will see their creations removed from the in-game marketplace and, eventually, from players' inventories entirely. The process of updating these designs is expected to be time-consuming, particularly for prolific creators who have produced hundreds of Classic Heads.
One concerned creator shared on X:
"I don't even know how the format for updating the faces is going to be... I'm honestly super worried…"
Another creator replied:
"I'm the same, and having more than 200 faces I don't know what to expect."
The backlash from the wider player base has been equally intense. Many long-time players are mourning the decision to eliminate static-faced Heads from the marketplace. Some are also worried that the game's classic body models could be the next to be phased out.
"Will R6 be the last thing we have left of the Roblox we know?"
— a player questioned in a post on Reddit, referring to the simple, blocky R6 avatar rig.
Another user in the same thread expressed fears that Roblox might soon enforce the more complex R15 rig as the default avatar, which is already a requirement for many games on the platform.
While Roblox claims the move to Dynamic Heads is about enhancing freedom of expression, many players believe it's a matter of convenience and control for the company. A Redditor, TypicalRobloxEnjoyer, who identifies as being "obsessed with old roblox culture," posted a screenshot of an undated community poll where 98% of respondents indicated a preference for 2D faces over Dynamic Heads, adding:
"I bet that the 2% that voted for dynamic faces are roblox's PR team."
Aside from the posts announcing the deadlines and offering conversion guides for creators, Roblox has not publicly addressed the player outcry or pleas to reverse the decision.
This controversy follows another recent and contentious change for Roblox. The company implemented a requirement for players to provide facial photo verification or a copy of their ID to access in-game chat. This measure was introduced to address concerns about the safety of child players, an issue for which Roblox has faced significant criticism over the years. The platform has been blamed for dangers faced by children, their disappearances, due to its previously lax ID verification system. However, similar to the Dynamic Heads debate, many players view this new safety policy as a convenient way for the company against this decision to collect user data under the pretense of child safety.
One player expressed their frustration on Reddit, writing:
"We went from Cheez-It Logo to STRAIGHT UP DISABLING CHAT FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANNA GIVE THEIR FACE... OH AND ON TOP OF THAT WE ARE REMOVING CLASSIC FACES. WHAT IS UP WITH ROBLOX AND FACES???"
In a significant policy shift, ROBLOX has made age verification mandatory for all users who wish to access its chat features. This new requirement is designed to create a safer environment by limiting communications between minors and adults and ensuring discussions are age-appropriate. The rollout began in the U.S. and will extend globally over the next week to all regions where chat is available. The platform is the first of its size to implement such a requirement for all users.
