Michał Kiciński, co-founder of CD Projekt, has acquired 100 percent ownership of GOG, the DRM-free digital PC games storefront he helped establish in 2008. The transaction transfers full control of the platform to Kiciński while keeping GOG operationally separate from CD Projekt’s internal structure.

GOG was previously owned by CD Projekt through its corporate entities, though it had already been operating independently for several years. Under the new ownership structure, Kiciński retains sole control while maintaining existing partnerships and distribution agreements. GOG confirmed it will continue to operate independently and adhere to its long-standing DRM-free policy for both developers and players.

“The mission stays the same: Make Games Live Forever,” the company said.

Kiciński framed the move as a continuation of the values that shaped both CD Projekt and GOG in their early years, emphasizing ownership, independence, and player freedom.

“CD Projekt and GOG share the same roots and values: freedom, independence, and a genuine sense of ownership. I believe that CD Projekt, with its exceptional AAA games, will stand, as always, behind the GOG offering — making GOG the best place on the planet to purchase The Witcher and Cyberpunk games, both existing titles and the new ones we all anticipate so much,” Kiciński said.

He also reiterated GOG’s focus on classic titles and games inspired by older design traditions, positioning that catalog as a core part of the store’s long-term direction rather than a secondary offering.

“As a mature gamer, I often play classic games myself and deeply admire the creativity behind many of them. I truly believe that well-crafted classics can deliver as much joy as new releases,” Kiciński said. “When it comes to pure playability, timeless games often prove to be really the safe choice, especially in a market flooded with gazillions of low-quality smaller games.”

Kiciński added that he is personally involved in the development of several retro-inspired titles and confirmed that those projects are expected to appear on GOG in 2026.

CD Projekt leadership described the sale as a strategic decision aligned with the publisher’s current development priorities. Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt, said the company’s focus has shifted fully toward expanding its franchises and delivering new large-scale releases.

“With our focus now fully on an ambitious development roadmap and expanding our franchises with new high-quality products, we felt this was the right time for this move,” Nowakowski said. He added that GOG is “going into very good hands” and expressed confidence in its future under Kiciński’s leadership.

As part of the transaction, GOG has signed a distribution agreement with CD Projekt that includes plans to release all upcoming CD Projekt Red titles on the platform, ensuring continued access to future Witcher and Cyberpunk releases through the DRM-free store.
