Sony hever stille prisene på PS4- og PS5-spill i Brasil og Tyrkia, noe som utløser negative reaksjoner.
Sony has once again stirred controversy by raising the prices of several PS4 and PS5 games in Brazil and Turkey — just months after a wave of criticism over increased PlayStation Plus subscription fees across Latin America. Despite that earlier backlash, the company has moved forward with a fresh round of price hikes, this time targeting individual game titles.
Rising Game Prices Add to Global Concerns
The cost of gaming has become a global concern. With AAA games now regularly launching at $70, and some premium editions approaching $90, speculation is growing that next-generation consoles may push prices even higher — possibly up to $80 for standard releases. While these prices may seem typical in wealthier markets, they represent a far greater burden in countries with weaker currencies or lower wages.
In Brazil, several first-party and third-party AAA titles for PS4 and PS5 are now selling for around 400 Brazilian Real (BRL) — roughly $73 USD. Over in Turkey, prices have climbed to 3,500 Turkish Liras (approximately $88 USD), a staggering 14% of the national minimum wage. In Brazil, that figure is about 26%. Fans in both countries are voicing frustration, calling the increases "ridiculous" and "unjustified."
Broken Promises: Price Hikes Arrive Early and Hit More Games Than Expected
Adding fuel to the fire, Sony’s Brazilian division had assured customers in May 2025 that no price increases would occur during the summer, and that only first-party titles would be affected — beginning in October with the release of Ghost of Yotei. Yet, the company began raising prices almost three months early, and the hikes have extended to third-party and non-exclusive games as well.
Examples of Price Increases in Brazil
Game Title | Old Price (BRL) | New Price (BRL) | Price in USD (approx.) |
---|---|---|---|
Astro Bot | 299.90 | 339.90 | $62 |
Death Stranding 2 | 349.90 | 399.90 | $73 |
Demon’s Souls | 349.90 | 399.90 | $73 |
Hell is Us | 299.90 | 339.90 | $62 |
Lost Soul Aside | 299.90 | 339.90 | $62 |
Ninja Gaiden 4 | 349.90 | 399.90 | $73 |
Silent Hill f | 349.90 | 399.90 | $73 |
The Last of Us Part I | 349.90 | 399.90 | $73 |
The Outer Worlds 2 | 349.90 | 399.90 | $73 (pre-orders: 456 BRL) |
WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers | 249.50 | 339.90 | $62 |
One of the most striking increases involves The Outer Worlds 2, which now costs 456 BRL (roughly $83 USD) for a standard edition pre-order, making it one of the most expensive base-game purchases in the region.
Players have also noted that older titles such as Demon’s Souls (2020) and Infamous Second Son (2014) have become more expensive — a change many deem unfair.
Sony Responds: "Economic Conditions to Blame"
In a statement, Sony Interactive Entertainment addressed the growing criticism by attributing the price hikes to “challenging market conditions,” including fluctuating currency exchange rates. The company clarified that its pricing model is region-specific and reflects the local economic environment. As a result, not only games but also add-on content have seen price increases in Brazil.
