Starfield Gets a Hilarious Makeover with Garfield-themed Mod
A creative Starfield modder has brought a touch of humor to Bethesda's latest title by giving it a Garfield-themed makeover. This amusing addition joins the growing collection of Starfield mods that have been cropping up online since the game's early access release on September 1st.
Bethesda's single-player RPGs have historically fostered some of the largest modding communities in the world. This tradition continues with Starfield, as it has already accumulated over 1,100 mods within the first five days of its full-fledged launch.
The latest addition to this expanding catalog of customizations is a whimsical Garfield mod created by Nexus Mods user TosothYaKnow. True to its name, this 133KB mod replaces Starfield's default start screen with one featuring the visage of the iconic fictional cat, Garfield. It's worth noting that the image of Garfield used for this mod is not from Jim Davis's comics but from the 2004 film "Garfield: The Movie". The original menu edit was the work of Reddit user J8oot, which inspired TosothYaKnow to transform the concept into a functional mod.
The initial 1.0 version of the mod may appear slightly pixelated on high-resolution displays due to the original image's 720p resolution. However, an updated 1.1 version of the mod has since been released, featuring an upscaled 4K version of the artwork. Additionally, the customized intro screen includes an altered Starfield logo spelling out "Garfield". It's important to note that this logo may clash with the original emblem. To resolve this issue, players can utilize the "Cleanfield" mod created by Nexus Mods user Gametism, which removes the game's original logo and pop-up messages from the introductory screen.
Notably, unlike many other Starfield mods that are incompatible with the PC Game Pass version of the game, this Garfield-themed menu overhaul can be applied to any version of Starfield. This is because the customization simply tweaks the RPG's default intro screen video without altering its executable file, making it accessible by merely placing the modified file into the game's installation folder.
While the majority of currently available Starfield mods offer relatively basic functionality, more intricate customizations will likely emerge over time, especially once Bethesda releases its Creation Kit for modding. According to a recent update from Todd Howard, the official Starfield modding tools are expected to be released in 2024, paving the way for more extensive and creative modifications.
