Ranking the Legendary Protagonists of the Grand Theft Auto Series: From Chaos to Character
The Grand Theft Auto franchise initially captivated fans with its immersive open worlds and the boundless opportunities it provided for players to create chaos within them. As the franchise evolved, a significant emphasis was placed on the narratives within these expansive worlds, and the central characters of each installment reflected this evolution.
The numerous protagonists in Grand Theft Auto have left an indelible mark on gaming, contributing to a diverse array of iconic figures. Over time, the depth, complexity, and frequency of Grand Theft Auto protagonists have steadily grown, sparking passionate debates among fans regarding the standout characters.
Note: This tier list exclusively considers the central characters of main Grand Theft Auto game releases.
S-Tier: Trevor Phillips, Niko Bellic, Carl Johnson
Trevor Phillips, a prominent character in Grand Theft Auto 5, unquestionably ranks among the franchise's top protagonists. His unpredictably erratic behavior and unusual moral compass stole the spotlight among the game's three central characters. Trevor added a unique blend of gruesome brutality and humor that perfectly encapsulated the essence of GTA 5 and the chaotic world of Los Santos, cementing his status as one of GTA's most iconic protagonists.
Grand Theft Auto 4 introduced Niko Bellic as a compelling protagonist who provided a sobering perspective on life in the criminal underworld. Players experienced the grit and challenges of Liberty City alongside Niko, as the game began with his emigration to the city. Scarred by his experiences in the Yugoslavian War and driven by a deep desire to protect his loved ones, Niko's character brought a touch of humanity to the eccentric world of Grand Theft Auto.
Carl Johnson, the unforgettable lead character of 2004's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, holds a special place in the hearts of long-time GTA fans. Like Niko, Carl's actions are motivated by a commitment to safeguarding his family, making loyalty a central theme in the narrative. Carl consistently displays exceptional skills beyond his circumstances, concealing a genuine aspiration to rise above life's challenges and make a name for himself.
A-Tier: Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, Tommy Vercetti
Many consider Michael De Santa the most narratively significant figure among GTA 5's trio of protagonists, with Trevor and Franklin playing supporting roles in his story. Michael, a career criminal living under the facade of "witness protection," struggles to maintain control over his life and family, making him appear somewhat pathetic at times. Nevertheless, beneath his flaws, Michael is a highly capable and empathetic character, contributing to his compelling portrayal as a protagonist.
Franklin Clinton also leaves a lasting impression as a central character, with his story echoing that of CJ from San Andreas. Similar to CJ, Franklin leverages his skills and uses Michael as a key contact and mentor to improve his life by any means necessary. Throughout GTA 5's narrative, Franklin exhibits maturity and emotional intelligence, making him a likable and impactful protagonist.
Tommy Vercetti led the story in 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, ascending through a neon criminal underworld reminiscent of 1980s Miami. With his confident, wisecracking demeanor and the memorable voice acting by the late Ray Liotta, Tommy Vercetti became a standout character. Tommy was also the first GTA protagonist to have a voice actor, which added to his iconic swagger.
B-Tier: Claude
In 2001, Grand Theft Auto 3 marked a significant shift in the franchise with its adoption of a 3D third-person perspective, forging a closer connection between players and the protagonist. However, GTA 3's main character, Claude, was voiceless, which limited his impact. While Claude's mystique has earned him a cult following among some GTA fans, his lack of dialogue diminishes his presence, placing him below many other Grand Theft Auto protagonists.
C-Tier: Claude Speed, GTA 1's Protagonist
Oddly, Grand Theft Auto 2 featured a silent protagonist named Claude, known as Claude Speed, leading some fans to connect him with the Claude from GTA 3. Nevertheless, the events before GTA 3 are now considered part of a different narrative universe. Playing as the voiceless Claude Speed from a top-down 2D perspective in GTA 2 made it challenging to establish a meaningful connection between players and the character, relegating him to a lower tier in the rankings.
The original Grand Theft Auto, released at an earlier time, faced similar limitations. GTA 1 allowed players to choose from several protagonist names, affecting only the in-game sprite's appearance, resulting in it occupying the bottom spot in the rankings of the franchise's many protagonists.
